Revalidation of the Spanish stone loach <i>Barbatula hispanica</i> (Lelek, 1987) (Teleostei, Nemacheilidae) according to morphological and mitochondrial data

This study revalidates Barbatula hispanica, previously considered a junior synonym of B. quignardi . species is found in the Ebro drainage and Cantabria (Spain) as well Adour (Southwestern France). It characterized by an upper lip with well-marked medial incision interorbital width 18.5–33.7% HL. The delineation corroborated cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 molecular marker. We provide sequence 12S rDNA (950 bp) reference for environmental DNA studies, discuss also taxonomy which would be restricted to Lez River.
